Financial Education

“Financial literacy is just as important in life as the other basics.  — John W. Rogers, Jr.”

Tempe Community Council’s Financial Stability Initiative (FSI) offers a variety of financial education opportunities for families, children (age 5-17) and Arizona State University students.

KIDS SAVE

Throughout the school year, Kids Save financial education classes are offered to students in the Tempe Elementary and Kyrene school district afterschool programs.  City of Tempe’s KidZone, Kyrene’s Kids Club and the East Valley Boys and Girls Clubs in Tempe serve as venues for children ages 4-8 to participate in the Kids Save financial education program for free.  This program offers students an opportunity to earn play dollars that can be exchanged for fun items available in the “class store.”  Students learn the basics of wants vs. needs, as well as becoming aware of how much money they spend and how to spend that money wisely.

ADULT AND FAMILY WORKSHOPS

Each year, several workshops are held for adults and families to help provide financial knowledge and skills on a variety of topics supporting financial stability and independence.  Some of the workshop topics include:  reducing debt, understanding credit, basics of savings and checking accounts, wants vs. needs, budgeting, buying a home, affording an education, financial coaching and more.

Thanks to the generous support of many funders including the City of Tempe, Employees Community Fund of Boeing, and Comerica, these workshops are offered free to youth, individuals and families.
