2024 Tempe VITA Tax Site Info 

Tempe Community Council offers free tax assistance through the IRS-sponsored  Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for qualified individuals.  This service utilizes IRS-certified volunteers to prepare an accurate, professional return that includes free electronic filing of both federal and state returns.

Eligibility

Taxpayers earning $64,000 or less in 2023 are eligible for free tax preparation services.  No income requirement for seniors 65+, veterans, or those with disabilities. 

In-Person Tax Services Offered By Appointment

In-Person (same day) – Requires the client to schedule an appointment, visit the tax site in-person with their tax documents and intake and consent forms.  The tax return is completed by a tax preparer on-site with the client present the same day.  

Drop-Off  – Requires the client to visit the tax site with their tax documents and intake and consent forms which are reviewed by a tax volunteer.  The tax return is completed without the client being present, but will be asked to return to review and sign their return at a later date and then e-filed. 

Other Tax Service Options Available 

Do-It-Yourself – Complete your own tax return for free (based on eligibility) by utilizing  either of these online programs:  My Free Taxes or IRS Free File Partners.

International/non-resident ASU students – please do not schedule a tax appointment.  For information on how to obtain assistance for this unique tax filing click here. 

Beginning in late February, our tax site will accept some walk-ins on an available basis during our operating hours listed above; however there is no guarantee your tax returns will be completed and filed that day, and there could be a considerable wait time.   

On a case-by-case basis, limited virtual-only options are available, please contact us if this is a needed service.

Check availability and schedule an online tax appointment beginning January 16, 2024 after 8am.  You can schedule your appointment for free tax services being offered at our Tempe tax site January 29-April 13, 2024.

Accommodation or Language Interpretation Requests

Disability accommodation or language interpretation requests require at least two weeks advance notice.  Submit your request when scheduling an appointment or by contacting us at 480.858.2300.
